Araucaria araucana ( Monkey puzzle tree)

Araucaria araucana is a tall growing, hardy evergreen tree native to Chile & Argentina. An architectural tree with a distinctive pyramidal shape when young maturing to an umbrella shape as it loses some lower branches. Horizontal branches are covered in a spiral of dark green, sharp, triangular leaves & when mature it bears cones in July & August. Best planted as a specimen as although slow growing it can reach approx. 6 m x 10 m in 10 years ultimately reaching about 25 m x 10 m making it a large tree that can live for over 1,000 years! Amazingly it can be dated back 200 million years.

Best planted in a sheltered spot in sun/part-shade in any reasonable moist but well-drained fertile soil. Water well for the first year until it is established. Hardy to - 12 C & a low maintenance tree as no pruning required. A good tree for coastal regions. Can be grown in a large container for a number of years to make a statement plant on a patio.
