Acer palmatum 'Rhode Island Red' is a slow growing Japanese maple with a dense, upright habit & rounded ovate crown. Palmate foliage emerges red in spring deepening as it ages. In autumn foliage changes to shades of bright orange. Deciduous with red stems in winter & rough grey bark. Reaches approx. 6' tall when mature. Easily grown. Hardy to -20 C. Shelter from strong winds. Any reasonable neutral to acid reasonably moist soil in sun/part-shade. Does not like strong midday sun or soil that is too dry. Mulch in winter. Extremely long lived up to 80 years or more.
