Pruning Acers
Pruning Acers (Japanese Maples). – When is the right time?
It is best not to prune Acers unless it is absolutely necessary as they usually grow quite naturally into attractive shapes as either shrubs or trees. However, if your plant needs pruning then the right time to do this is when the plant is dormant from Nov-Jan. Young trees are sometimes prone to growing thin branches that can detract from the trees’ attractive appearance. Branches can grow & become strong if they are pruned early on more mature trees. On younger trees, however, it is better to exert patience as these thin branches will eventually become fatter. Acers can be lightly pruned in spring/summer to remove any dead branches. Never remove more than 20% of the crown of the tree & no more than a quarter of the foliage on any strong branch. Removing too much foliage at one time can stop the tree producing nutrients. It can also expose the trunk & new branches to sun damage.
