Magnolia obovata (Japanese big leaf maple)
Magnolia obovata is a hardy, deciduous, tall growing tree ideal for a larger garden. Large cup-shaped, fragrant, creamy-white flowers with crimson stamens in May followed by bright pinkish-red cone-like fruits. Sun/part-shade in a moist but well-drained slightly acidic soil. Hardy to - 15 C but needs a sheltered position so that buds & flowers are not damaged by cold winds & late frosts. The shape & size of the tree can be controlled to some degree by pruning which should be done immediately after flowering or in late summer. Originally native to Japan.
Grown in a very large pot so collection from the nursery only.
