A tuberous perennial with flowers, sometimes scented, in shades of pink with deep maroon markings in mid and late autumn before the leaves. Foliage is triangular to heart-shaped mid to dark green often purplish-green beneath. Self seeds freely. Approx. 10-13cm x 15cm. Moderately fertile, well-drained, humus-rich soil in partial shade. Ideal under trees or shrubs. Mulch annually with leaf mould as leaves wither.
