Eryngium bougatii 'Picos Amethyst'

Eryngium bourgatii 'Picos Amethyst' is a perennial clump former with beautiful amethyst-blue prickly flowers in summer into autumn. As the plant clumps up it creates an intense splash of blue in your border.  The flowerheads can be left on the plant or once they are completely blue can be cut off and used fresh in flower arrangements or air dried and used later. They grow to approx. 45cm x 30cm. They need very well drained soil in full sun for the best results.  They are loved by bees and other insects and are are great addition if you enjoy attracting wildlife to your garden.

These plants are relatives of the sea holly that grows naturally on sandy beaches making them ideal if your garden is very sandy and well drained.  However, they can grow well in gardens that are not well drained as lond as you ensure that they are not waterlogged at the roots through the winter.  Make a small molehill and plant on top so that the roots do not stand in water.  The roots will need extra protection in bad weather (cover with a bucket topped with a brick) as this does not create moisture round the neck of the plant as a mulch might do.
