We are delighted to welcome groups and societies to the nursery. We are open 3 days Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10.30am until 4pm (closed from 19th December until 4th of Feb) and the only restrictions on visits are when we are getting ready for, attending shows or the week following our return from a show when everything needs to be put away. The week immediately after a show is always very busy as we often struggle to keep the sales area well stocked whilst we are exhibiting and also the nursery is usually somewhat denuded of flowering plants. The nursery is always open whilst we are away at a show but only run with a skeleton staff.
Costs - It is free to visit the nursery if your group just wants to buy plants
. However if you would also like a short talk then a visit costs £2.00 per head (minimum group size 15 people or a minimum charge of £30 for smaller
groups). We give visitors a talk about what we do, plants of particular interest at the time of the visit and a look behind the scenes at areas not normally open to nursery visitors. There is then time to browse through the sales areas and buy plants with us still available to answer questions and give advice.
Plants for collection -
If you would like to browse our website and email or ring us with your plant list we are happy to get your plants ready for your visit. This is a bonus to you if you are on a trip that is pushed for time especially as we have a large growing area and so if the plants you would like don't happen to be out for sale it can be time consuming for us to locate them if we are busy. Alternatively we are happy to send your plants on to you if they will not fit in the coach. We use a 24hr carrier and you can ship a lot of plants for a standard £15.50 charge (up to 20 Kg in weight, quite a lot of plants).
About the nursery
A small family run traditional nursery in a lovely environment and we are passionate about the plants we grow. Our plants are hardy, grown naturally and grow well all over the country. We are proud to grow a wide range of high quality plants including many unusual varieties of herbaceous perennials, shrubs, grasses, ferns, herbs and some wall shrubs and climbers. We have larger collections of Barnhaven primroses, Paeonias and Astrantias. We are always happy to offer help and advice. Why not sign up for our email newsletter, on our home page, to keep in touch with nursery news.
The Heaves Hotel -
Can generally provide teas/coffees/bar meals/light refreshments if pre-booked. Please enquire directly with the hotel about refreshments at the same time as you enquire about a nursery visit to ensure that you are not disappointed:- 015395 60269 (Heaves Hotel number). We can suggest other local venues if necessary.
Places of Interest nearby -
We are ideally situated between Levens Hall (famous for Topiary gardens) and Sizergh Castle (NT property) both within half a mile of the nursery. Please note they are both closed on Fridays and Saturdays. Slightly further away but well worth a visit is Holehird, the Lakeland Horticultural Society's ten acre hillside garden holding National Collections. This is a wonderful garden to visit at any time of year, plants are well-labelled and well cared for by a dedicated group of volunteers. Many plants bought from us have a home in these gardens.
Please ring the nursery on: 015395 61126 or email: firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to discuss a visit.
