Moving Snowdrops and other spring flowering bulbs.

Moving Snowdrops and other spring flowering bulbs.
When do I move my Snowdrops and other spring flowering bulbs?
It is almost time to move spring flowering bulbs if you want to split them to distribute them into other areas of your garden.  Snowdrops and Bluebells are best moved when all the flowers have flowered and started to die away.

It is difficult to get any of these varieties to grow from dried bulbs and so much better to bulk up from your own plants, get some from a friend or buy them from a nursery selling them in pots or 'in the green'.  As the weather has turned cold again and the soil has not had a chance to warm up it would be better to wait until the weather picks up again before trying to move and split any of your bulbs.

When you are ready to lift your bulbs, make sure that you lift them carefully with a lot of soil so that there is no danger that you slice your bulbs in half.  Gently tease them apart either into single bulbs or small clumps and then replant them.  Leave all the leaves on as they will send food and energy back into the bulb for next year but it is better to cut off the dead flowerheads.  Don't forget to water them well and if the weather has warmed up they should soon make new roots and you will enjoy your new plantings next year.
