At last we have been able to re-open after an extended Christmas break. Bob began to think that he had retired although we have both been working at home (Bob on the books and I have been updating the website). Bob had been going to the nursery every couple of days to collect the post, check on the plants and to feed the birds but even on Monday there was still some areas of quite deep snow in the nursery, especially on the car park.
We have been lucky however with no burst pipes or water frozen up. Also Bob managed to brush the heavy snow off the tunnel canopy before it did any damage. At this time of year the watering can be crucial as the small plants growing on in the tunnel soon dry out when there is any sun at all. They need to be watered extremely carefully, by hand, with a watering can. Too little and they quickly die of thirst and too much and they just as quickly rot off.
We expect that we will have suffered some losses but it is too early to tell yet. It is amazing how resilient plants can be especially if they are planted. Plant roots that have frozen in pots obviously cause most problems. The blanket of snow however has been helpful even though the mice have still managed to damage some plants buried in snow! Although we like to work with wildlife as much as possible at times our patience is sorely tried. Anyway, back to the website and hope to see you at the nursery soon.
